Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have ADHD as an adult? ADHD in adults can look different than the hyperactivity many people associate with childhood ADHD. Common symptoms may include difficulty focusing, procrastination, forgetfulness, disorganization, time management issues, feeling mentally overwhelmed, or struggling to follow through consistently. A psychiatric evaluation can help determine whether ADHD may be contributing to your symptoms while also evaluating for anxiety, depression, burnout, sleep problems, or other conditions that can overlap with attention difficulties.
Can anxiety look like ADHD? Yes. Anxiety, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, depression, burnout, and trauma can sometimes cause concentration difficulties that resemble ADHD. At the same time, untreated ADHD can also lead to anxiety from chronic overwhelm, procrastination, missed deadlines, and difficulty keeping up with responsibilities. A thorough evaluation helps clarify what may be contributing to your symptoms so treatment can be more targeted and effective.
What treatments are available for ADHD? Treatment for ADHD may include medication, therapy referrals, behavioral strategies, lifestyle adjustments, and executive functioning support. Depending on your symptoms and goals, treatment may include stimulant or non-stimulant medications, CBT-based approaches, exercise and routine building, sleep optimization, stress management, and practical coping strategies. Treatment plans are individualized and adjusted over time based on effectiveness, side effects, and personal goals.
Do stimulant medications change your personality? The goal of ADHD medication is not to change your personality. Effective treatment may help improve focus, organization, motivation, and emotional regulation so that day-to-day tasks feel more manageable. If side effects occur or a medication does not feel like a good fit, adjustments can be made. Treatment should feel collaborative and individualized.
What if I do not want to take stimulant medication? Not everyone wants stimulant medication, and that is completely okay. There are non-stimulant medication options available, as well as behavioral strategies, therapy referrals, executive functioning tools, lifestyle interventions, and coping skills that may still provide meaningful improvement. Treatment should align with your comfort level, goals, and preferences.
